I am using maple veneered plywood for the top. Looking at the plans it says to glue down, it does not say anything about nailing? After adding a 8 3/4″ over hang to the bar top I decided to extend some 2x4s out to the edge to give the top some bracing, is there any reason not to do this? The bar is 7′ with a 90 degree corner then 7′ and a 45 degree corner (kegerator built into the 45) and then about 2 feet.
i built my entire bar out of maple instead of oak…just about done and looks jus tlike I wanted. I built a 10 ft by 5 ft “L” bar with a 5 1/2 overhang. My bar was a little unstable and I just 1×2 support covered by crown mounlidng and nailed and glued it down. I went crazy with glue and nails with my nail gun b.c I knwo it is easy to cover up and would rather cover holes than have unstable bar. I think your idea would work with that much overhang. make sure you psot pics…
What do you mean unstable ? I figured the nail holes should be easy to cover up also so why not make sure it is attached well. I just ordered maple to trim it out. What size foot rest did you make? What did you wrap the foot rest with. I will post pics when I am done.
I guess unstable was the wrong word. I made my bar using the kegger bar plans ar a rough plan but adapted them to make my bar longer and with an added L section for a sink. Wha tI was saying is that if you make too much of an overhang the bar top may be “squeaky” and hav e alittle play if you do not support it properly. My overhang is 5 inches plus the 2.5 in form the custom bar rail I ordered. I did not put any added supports just glue and nails and it is rock solid. I cov ered my step with maple boards and added a brass metal guard on the edge for both decoration and safety for my young son. My foot rest was covered exactly by 1×6 both on top and front.
That sounds like a good size for the foot rest. I measured the bar at the legion in my area and they had a 10″ foot rest but it just seemed a little big for my room. Did you post pics of your bar? Would be great to see.
pics ar in the works…waiting for the boss (my wife) to decide what color stain she likes before it is finzhed. a usual…women holding things up. But then agian she did let me build this bar!
Once it is done I can guarantee pics will be posted.
