Bar back questions

I have some unique problems with the area for my bar back. The wall has my circuit breaker box behind it. I have put up 2 hinged painted MDF doors to conceal the box. I have attached (4) 8″ x 36″ mirror strips to the doors as well. It looks good but I want to add the bar back.

What I would like to do is the bar back without bottom cabs. I am not really seeing where or how the unit is attached to the wall. Mine will have to be altered a fair amount. I have a 1″ clearance between top of MDF doors and the ceiling which means I will probably have to cut the doors to give more room. I might have to just put the two boxed shelves (side shelves next to the mirror) along side my existing MDF doors. I want some shelves for bottles, glasses, etc. but I just can’t figure how to make this happen without some “L” brackets or something just as ugly.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jerry

        Jerry,

I think my mental picture of your situation might benefit from a possible solution.

If you just want to hang a cabinet, assuming good construction techniques creating a solid shell, you could use hangers that can be concealed from view by the cabinet itself.

I have hung cabinets using 2×4 ripped at 45 degrees. Bottom half (with angle pointing up) is screwed into the studs at the appropriate height for the top and bottom of the cabinet. The other half is built into (or onto) the cabinet, and the cabinet is hung on the rails. If you have access, once hung throw a couple of screws into the studs to keep it tight. You can then trim to the wall and eliminate the need for L brackets. 2×6 will work also.

You may want to consider mounting the frame and then finishing the cabinet with it mounted on the wall.

        Hope this helps.

I was thinking along those lines, something nailed to the studs and attaching shelf to that. I really like your angle idea though.

I’m starting to think maybe 2 boxes one on either side of my MDF doors 16″W x 42″H x 5″D. Probably want another shelf centered in the boxes. What do you think of 1×2’s nailed into the studs then the top shelf hung on that glued and nailed, same with the bottom shelf?

If I could find somewhere that sells those metal plates you see in some picture frames the kind with a round hole and then a slot, you put a screw in the wall fit the hole of that over the screw and slide it down the slot. They have to sell them somewhere but I don’t know what you would call it. I think it would take some serious measuring but those recessed into the 3/4″ boards of the boxes would give me the look I’m after.

I don’t think there will be that much weight on them but will they be secure enough? At 5″ deep they will hold most any bottle or glass, I figured some sort decorative short spindled fence like thing on the front.

Still trying to figure this out I appreciate you answering.

I still don’t see how the plan for the bar back attaches to the wall as a wall hanger.
