Here’s the real test. Ask the fridge dealer if the freezer plate will develop frost and ask how long it will take to cool compared to a freon fridge. Most new fridges use a non CFC refrigerant which does not work as quickly as freon.
If you can get the freezer plate frosty, you’ve got a good fridge. I have just found that the exposed back (coils) can also be cooled better with an external 12vdc fan. I would think if you simply place an external fan in an area where it will pull air away from the rear of the fridge, that would work the same.
As far as the internal fan on the freezer plate, I found that blowing air over the plate (in) works best. Think of it like this…if you’ve got frost, you’ve got a 32 degree F (or zero C) surface. All that you need to do is circulate the air over that surface to cool the entire keg box area, which will, in turn, cool the keg and beer.
