Wood filler before stain or stain then wood filler? I have this nice unfinished oak bar that requires hmmmm…patching of craftmanship errors. I’ve searched online for a recommendation but haven’t found an answer. Should I stain the bar, then use colored wood filler (i.e. mixing filler and stain) or should I fill all my gaps before staining? I’ve heard that the filler doesn’t stain well and that I’ll be reapplying stain to those areas anyway. Thanks for any lessons learned or expert help.

Filler first, then sand, then stain, then poly or Envirotex.
I’ve never heard of filler that didn’t take stain. Read the container before you buy though.

I used filler that is recommended for staining. It looks a little darker than the wood when stained, but as long as your “craftsmanship errors” aren’t too egregious it isn’t very noticeable.

You can also stain, poly, than fill with colored puddy. You would then poly again to lock in the puddy and keep it from shrinking. This is commonly done in flooring.
