I picked up a 2.7cu ft Haier fridge from Walmart yesterday, it was model # HSP03WNAWW and the only 2.7 they carried.
When I opened it up it is a “flat back” design (no external coils), the manual says you need the following clearance around the firdge:
Sides: 3/4″
Top: 2″
Back: 2″This tells me that this is probably not going to work inside the kegger bar. The fridge does have an opeing on the back towards the bottom where the compressor sticks out a bit, and it is opened to the air.
Has anyone used this fridge? If I add vents/openings to the bar to allow some airflow around the fridge, will this provide enough air circulation?

September 15, 2005 at 8:53 pm #19707AnonymousI too looked at this model number on internet, and saw it (like many others) had flat back. I assumed this meant no coils exposed, and wouldnt work well, (like you said, needs clearance).
Seems like a lot of the newer ones have internal coils, and can not be inset.Maybe the back could be removed to expose the coils?
Otherwise you might have to provide more clearance around fridge by making fridge comparment bigger, and blowing fans around that area. Not having enough clearance causes fridge to work too hard becase heat cant get out of coils, and heat buildup could get back into fridge thru the walls, causing it to work even harder. . . .
I am looking at the Sears one, Sears item #04694256000 Mfr. model #564-94256400.
which I am hoping has exposed back and no coils in side walls. I need to go look at it and read owners manual.
Anyone have some model numbers that they have made work with the exposed coils?
September 15, 2005 at 11:09 pm #19708The sears model you describe is built exactly like the one from Walmart. (So similar, that it is probably manufactured by the same company) I was looking at that one before I bought the Walmart model. I figured for $80 for the Walmart unit, I could take it home and see for myself (since they didn’t have a display model).
I will have to take a closer look at the Walmart model to see if the case will come off without too much damage, as I dont want to wreck it if I don’t plan to use it. I will try to post some pictures if I am successful taking the cover off.
September 16, 2005 at 3:07 am #19709AnonymousI guess I am confused. . . . .The sears unit does not say anything about clearance, nor anything about flat back. Sears 04694256000 is 2.5 cu/ft
Haier HSP03WNAWW is 2.7 cu/ftHave you seen the sears 04694256000 unit in person?
September 16, 2005 at 6:45 pm #19711Yes, I saw the Sears model in person, the back of the fridge is exactly the same as the Walmart fridge, same compressor and everything.
Tonight I will have some time to tinker with the Walmart fridge and see if the cover will come off without too much effort to figure out where the coils actually are.
September 16, 2005 at 7:23 pm #19713Anonymousrats! I was hoping sears one would work for me. Let me know how you do tinkering with WM fridge. How much did you look around for fridge with exposed coils before you bought WM fridge?
September 19, 2005 at 10:02 pm #19721Well, no luck dismantling the outside of the fridge, its on there pretty well, looks like they just used a boatload of “Great STuff” type of insulation to hold the outside panels of the fridge on since there are only 4 screws holding the entire thing on. I took out the screws and pulled at the case for a little bit, but no luck, I didn’t want to pull too hard and tear the entire thing apart.
Anyway, I decided to say the heck with it and am using this fridge anyway. I’ll add a few fans and see what happens.
To answer the how long question, I look at all the stores I could think of that sell the fridges and they all basically sell the flat back design, with no exposed coils…Maybe the better bet would be to check garage sales, but I dont have the patience for that.
September 20, 2005 at 12:25 am #19722AnonymousI went to Best Buy this weekend, and bought the Haier HSP03WNAWW for $110. which had exposed condensor and exposed coils. The Sanyo had exposed condensor, but couldnt see coils.
You can see that fridge here: best buy fridge
The manual says you need 2 inch clearance on top and back, and 3/4 inch clearance on sides. I took some prelim data on external top temperature during cool down, and it didnt get hot. In fact it dropped in temp. That tells me there are no coils in top, and probably not in sides either. I will check further. So if you can get the heat out the back using a fan on the coils, I dont see why you couldn’t further insulate the top & sides.
So far the fridge seems to work pretty good. Will start building the bar around it soon. It will be a cross between the keg bar and the L shaped bar. fun fun fun.
September 20, 2005 at 2:37 am #19723Anonymousi too am building a cross between the keg bar and the l shaped bar. i found my Haier fridge at futureshop in Canada. got it on sale for 130$CAN. last week. very quite and small (2.7cu ft)
September 26, 2005 at 10:12 pm #19731AnonymousI used the Walmart fridge. I have a permanent $10 fan mounted pointing at the condensor on the rear, and a small PC fan mounted on top of the fridge, built in, to circulate air near the top and the sides. It hold at about 40 degrees or slightly higher and lower. It’s OK as long as you use cold glasses.
October 14, 2005 at 1:21 am #19741See my two posts in the “how do I get the keg box colder” post for answers on how to use the fridge without the exposed coils. The fridge size is not necessarily the issue, because many of the 2.7-4 cuft fridges use the same compressor and same internal heat exchanger (the ice box portion).
December 3, 2006 at 7:06 pm #19913AnonymousI ordered the 2.7 fridge off the internet from Walmart and it was exactly what was needed.
Here’s the Walmart Product Link…it’s the one to buy.
Also, My Kegger project photos are on webshots where this pic is located…check it out here
March 13, 2007 at 6:31 am #19987AnonymousHi all…just got back from Walmart…they had the following rear coil fridge in stock:

I’m guessing YMMV with whether or not they have it in stock…I got lucky.

I found this site searching for bar plans as I have been wanting to buy or build one for a long time. I plan to start building within the next week or two and this site, as well as your photos are very helpful. Thanks!

June 23, 2009 at 2:37 am #20345on the barplans website it says to get a frige for the kegger box under 25′ height. yet all the ones being recommend seem to be slightly over 26′ does this matter?
