If you have questions regarding where to place screws or how to connect two boards together, please post your questions here.

Before you do anything, download and open the Builders Tips Document. It contains some information on screws and how to use fasteners. Most of it is very basic and common sense.

      Screws:
In a nutshell, use no more than 2 screws for 2 x 4 stud intersections.
As you start building, it should be easy to do the simple logic to decide where a screw should be placed to connect the boards as shown in the assembly guides.
Always start by gluing, then inserting one screw in a diagonal arrangement within the intesecting boards.
I do not install the second screw until I am sure the corners are all in square.
Once you have the framing completed, square it up and lock it down by added a second screw diagonally to the first screw.
See the builders tips document for more information.

      Glue:
Unless otherwise state in the step by step sections, you may use glue freely as required.
Use either Elmer’s type wood glue or PL200 or simular caulk gun style construction glue.

      Bar Top:
Always lay a bead of glue on all surfaces that will contact the bar top.
Then use hardened (at least 2″) finishing screws then wood putty as needed.

      Finishing nails:
I ALWAYS use only hardened finishing tails for all external oak trim panels.
They don’t bend over as easily as regular “soft” finishing nails. see the nail sizing guide in the builders document.

I think by diagonal, he means to use one screw per corner.
Start in one corner, place one screw. Go to the diagonally opposite corner, place one screw. So on. After all corners have a screw, make sure everything is square then place an additional screw.

Beer is right…for structural members, one screw is not enough.
I’ll add this topic to the Builder’s Tips document.

Here some other tips that might make your fastening tasks easier:

            1. Instead of screws, you can use nails, but if you go that route, get a pneumatic air nailer. One quick bang and your nail is driven home.
For the novice builder, I still recommend screws over nails since there are no bent over nails to deal with. Always use a cordless power screwdriver or drill with an extra battery on charge.

            2. Get a set of “quick clamps” to act as a second pair of hand to hold the connection in place before screwing or nailing.

For the 2×4 in the Tailgater bar what do you recommend I do to fasten all the pieces of the side panel together? I don’t really see any places which would be good for screwing since it would have to go through the 3.5″ part to connect anything. This is my first wood building project ever and I kind of need the basic stuff pointed out to me.

I’m a novice and am having trouble figuring out how to attach my bar front to my frame without having any screws showing.

I thought about going in through the back (ie screwing in through the frame into the back of the bar front), but am concerned this won’t be secure enough.

I’m sure there must be a simple solution but I just can’t see it.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

              Thanks.

tw – That model is best assembled using PL-200 construction adhesive and finish nails, or a finish naiver (air powered). The side panel itself forms the base on which you assemble the 2x framing.
You can also use screws from the plywood side into the 2 x boards.
The heads would be covered by the exterior finish panel.

perth – same thing, use adhesive and finish nails for panels that you KNOW you’ll never remove. Decorative screws can be used for access panels (if needed on keg box models) or cover the seams & screw heads with a decorative trim board to cover the seam.

To attach the bar tender side hardwood trim boards, investigate “Pocket Hole Joinery” or use countersunk finish nails and putty the holes.
